Lake Powell FAQ

Can you see Lake Powell for free?

Yes, from two overlooks outside the fee gates near Page. Anything past an entrance station, including every beach and ramp, needs the $30 pass.

Updated

Yes, from two viewpoints that sit outside the entrance stations. Wahweap Overlook is 3 miles north of Glen Canyon Dam off US-89: a gravel lot, a shade shelter and a bench looking over Wahweap Bay, Tower Butte and Navajo Mountain, with no railing at the edge. The Glen Canyon Dam Overlook is off Scenic View Drive 1.5 miles south of the Carl Hayden Visitor Center, a 940-foot walk down rock steps to the canyon rim with the dam in frame. The visitor center itself is free, parking included. Horseshoe Bend is the Colorado River, not the lake, and the City of Page charges for parking there. Everything past a fee booth, including Lone Rock, Wahweap Swim Beach and every launch ramp, needs the $30 vehicle pass, and so does the drive to Alstrom Point. The dam tours guide has directions to both free overlooks.
